Reflection

New Year, New Decade, New Life

It’s 4:30 a.m. here in Birmingham, England, and I’m wide awake having been recently introduced to a completely different time zone. After tossing, turning, thinking, reflecting and praying for the last two hours, it was time to get up (hopefully just for an hour or so) and bring you all up to date and pen a few reflections.

New Years’ Eve was our last day in Canada. It was a frenetic day filled with final packing, last minute logistics and getting the house we were sitting shipshape for the return of its owners in the spring. Truly, it wouldn’t have gotten done without the help of two good friends and my parents. We are grateful.

At 4 p.m., it was off to the airport where we were greeted by a number of friends there to see us off. We were very touched by the sendoff, complete with best wishes and promises to pray for our journey. God has placed South Africa and the Zulu people in the hearts of many in Calgary, for reasons He alone knows.

By 6pm, it was time for final goodbyes. My mom was very tearful, and didn’t want to let go of us, but mom and dad gave us their blessings and finally sent us off in God’s hands. A bite to eat, then boarding at 7:45pm for our 8:15pm flight. I had to chuckle at the weather:  -20 degrees C and snowing. We don’t expect to see weather like that for a while.

So here we are in Birmingham, for a week’s RnR with Kerry’s cousin’s family. We plan to relax mostly, with a day planned in London on Wednesday taking the kids to places like the Tower of London and Madame Tussaud’s, along with lunch with a cousin from Kerry’s father’s side.

I’m reflecting on the nature of emotions. They are funny things in that you can feel intense and opposite emotions at the same time. There is a significant sense of loss at not being able to be with dear friends and family face to face for who knows how long. Our friends and family are scattered from Ottawa to Kelowna, B.C. We don’t see many of them of them often, but we always felt that a good visit was just a matter of a bit of time and the right circumstance – a business trip to Calgary by a friend, a family trip to Kelowna for Thanksgiving, a weekend in Edmonton for a visit with dear family and friends. In addition, we’ve made some significant, lifelong friends in the five years we were in Calgary. Hardly a day went by that we didn’t have a significant conversation with at least one of them. So I’m grieving that, while email and Skype will keep us in touch, I won’t be having that coffee at Starbucks, dinner with friends or that game of squash with the guys.

At the same time, there is a deep, exciting anticipation. Is it a coincidence that the first day of a new decade was also the first day of our new life? As I learn about myself, I’m becoming more aware of my desire for adventure. As we embark on this adventure, I must admit I’m rather intrigued with the unknown. I know just enough about South Africa in general and the Zulu people in particular to know I don’t have much of a clue, but I’m thrilled that, in a few short days, I’ll be immersed in a whole new world as a learner of a foreign language, culture, history and way of life. Our purpose is to be conduits of Christ’s love, hope and grace to a desperate area, but our posture in doing so is humility and enhancing human dignity. And I’m looking forward to the challenge of discerning, with others there, how best to do that. 2010 promises to be an unforgettable year!

Our hope and prayer for you all is that 2010 is a year of experiencing the grace and glory of God revealed, and that it’s a year of becoming more like Christ.
