Our Vehicle Theft Saga

carOne constant of our life in South Africa is that there are always challenges that we probably wouldn’t be dealing with if we were living in Canada.

A few short weeks after our arrival back in South Africa following our Home Assignment, our car was stolen right out of a large parking lot of a retail outlet called MAKRO. And there were “car guards” on duty! The theft was shockingly brazen. Security cameras clearly show our car was being followed into the parking lot by another vehicle – a white Volkswagen Polo. We found it odd that it was difficult to lock our car – it took multiple tries on the remote to get our doors locked. We now know the thieves were trying to jam our remote to make it even easier to get in.

But we did get the doors locked, and yet the thieves got in anyway and drove the car away. We don’t know how they got the car started!

What an odd feeling to come back to where you know you parked the car, and it simply isn’t there! It’s a weird thing to process, I can tell you! We walked around the parking lot for almost ten minutes carrying a huge plastic planter we had just purchased. Dan looked like he was a concession vendor at a baseball game!

Now we know that cars do get stolen in Canada. The difference for us is in how difficult and stressful it’s been to get the situation sorted insurance-wise. The car was recovered by police within 3 hours, and it was still driveable. Our GPS unit was stolen, as was Kerry’s favourite denim jacket, all our Music CD’s, and much of the interior panelling and all of the air con ductwork was ripped out. The thieves were searching for a tracking unit. The car wasn’t fitted with one, but of course they didn’t know that.

That was October 6. On December 19, we were able to finally pickup our car. It sat in the police pound for 4 weeks, and while it was there, the battery was stolen out of it, and the hood of the car damaged!! Things often move very, very slowly in South Africa… All of that to say it’s been a long, stressful, expensive process. Most insurance policies, ours included, don’t cover rental vehicle costs.

We are thankful that the situation could have been much, much worse. Car hijackings, often violent, are not uncommon here. It is clear our vehicle was targeted for theft, and I shudder to think what could have happened if we’d parked somewhere else. Thank-you, Lord, for your protection!
