Compost Making in Ethiopia

Compost is such an important topic in our Farming God’s Way training. Using readily available ingredients to make rich organic inputs for soil is an excellent way of helping people to see that they have rich resources available. We spent a whole afternoon in Butajira making compost with our Ethiopian participants. They will now have the opportunity to reproduce what they learned in their own contexts.

We asked each participant to gather a handful of green material during their lunch hour.

The green material collected over lunch was taken from weeds growing at the sides of the road.

People were amazed at how much green material was available, if they looked carefully.

We were going to get over 100 people to make this pile. Dan explains how it is all going to work and that we need everyone’s participation.

Once the process got going it was hectic keeping everyone organized!

We started with the four post markers for the pile.

The first layer is woody material. This can include small sticks. Woody material encourages fungal growth and helps keep the pile aerated.

Then a layer of dry materials. We dip the dry materials in water.

Manure is the compost activator with its high nitrogen content.

Adding a lot of water to the pile is so important.

We ran out of ingredients, so Dan explained how many more layers would need to be added.

The whole crowd was very intrigued by the whole process.
