A Rich Legacy for a Beloved Director: Sandra Tjart

In early 2009, we met Sandra Tjart for the first time. We often wonder what she thought of that first meeting. Here were 2 Calgarians, a Worship Pastor and a Women’s Community Leader sitting in front of her in her office explaining their dream to move to South Africa. There had been no background, no lead up. We called her up one day and asked for a meeting.

Sandra, in her most gracious way, listened carefully to what we were outlining and asked lots of questions. We had an ambitious timeline in that we wanted to be in South Africa by the beginning of 2010. We could tell that she didn’t want to dash our hopes, but she kindly explained all the details that would have to come into place for our dream to become a reality. Together we were all sobered by the momentous task ahead. From that very first meeting, Sandra has been our number 1 advocate. She presented our case to the governing board and we were approved as World Partners Workers. Behind the scenes she has represented us and supported us. Wherever possible she connected us with churches to build our network.

We did get to South Africa in January of 2010 and Sandra has been instrumental in our success and longevity here. Sandra’s leadership is some of the most empowering leadership that we have worked under. Her confident release of us to dream and create our own vision, affirmed continually how much she believed in our own leadership and implementation. She prayed daily for us and the details we shared with her were never just details. She remembered names, places and connections. When Kerry’s beloved friend and Zulu teacher passed away, Sandra knew the impact and loss that we would feel. She was so quick to send a note of love and support.

In such a short time on a recent visit to South Africa, Sandra developed a connection with Tholakele. Language was a barrier but love was a unifier.

In today’s corporate environment the art of listening has become a lost art. It seems that being a leader is equated to having all the answers and telling people what to do. Sandra has demonstrated that leadership in its essence is about helping others to be successful. Sandra is a true empowerer of people. Sandra’s years of cross cultural work brought great depth to her leadership as well. She understood very well the dynamics of the interactions between the over-resourced world and the under-resourced world. She carried herself as a true co-labourer with such humility and compassion.

We will truly miss all that Sandra brought to the leadership of World Partners and to our lives. Sandra, your retirement is an opportunity to continue to pursue your leadership dreams. You no longer have mandatory office hours and reporting that you are responsible for which frees you up to pursue your deeply held passions. We hope that this will be an enriching chapter in your life and that your leadership strengths will be reproduced in many other people.
