Only the Beginning for Senzo

The beautiful northwest townships near Durban.

Our pickup truck navigated the rough path up the hill to Senzo’s house in the rolling hills of the northwest townships of Durban, South Africa. We were visiting Senzo after he had attended one of our Farming God’s Way trainings in Ballito. It was a scorching hot east coast afternoon and any open ground was baking in the heat. Senzo was elated to see us and we felt privileged to receive such a warm greeting. We were immediately escorted on a tour of his small property.

What evolved in the tour was an account of his farming methods. We were first shown his initial plot of maize, leaves wilting in the heat and catastrophically withered. The plant spacings were erratic and the garden looked in complete chaos with dry stalks leaning dead and lifeless. We weren’t sure what to make of it because the results were terrible. He slowly led us up his property and we could see a small improvement in the plants. He was particularly proud of the green onions he had planted.

Dan pauses for a moment with Senzo on the tour of his property. The soil was baking on this hot day.

Finally we were brought to his second plot of maize. This plot he had planted with Farming God’s Way methods and we rejoiced in the improvement. While the maize plants still looked a little heat stressed the leaves were dark green and vibrant and the spacing and population were much better. Senzo went on to recount how much his mindset and life had changed since the one training he attended.

“I never thought I would ever see maize like this on my property. All my neighbours are asking how I planted it! Agriculture is now my school! Before I was toiling on my property, and now God has shown me that he has so much for me and a way for me to thrive on this land. I can provide for my family! I can see that God is good and he is helping me.”

Dan spoke words of encouragement to Senzo, but he also issued a huge challenge. “Senzo, this is only the beginning. Your maize will improve if you keep applying what you have learned. This whole field needs to be covered in mulch to protect the soil! And you need to teach your neighbours! This is your land; steward it wisely.”

We get so excited working with someone like Senzo because he seems motivated to impact his community.

Senzo has seen the beginning of what the land can produce. He has caught a glimpse of the abundance that God intends for all who choose to be faithful with the resources given to them. In fact, Senzo could see a 20x increase in what he produces on the land. He has begun to step into the identity of being an owner and caretaker of what God has given him. He is no longer surviving but beginning to thrive. This is the whole good news of restoration in South Africa!

  1. I am so excited to see Senzo’s garden; the difference between the two plots. Thank you God for leading this man to Farming God’s Way and to the changes that are occurring on his property and what can occur in his community. I am praying for Farming God’s Way to take hold in the northeast of Haiti as well.
