Inundo Leadership Reflection

A Challenging But Good Journey

The path to finding a home for the Inundo model farm has been a challenging one, to say the least. After searching for three months at the beginning of 2019 for a great location in our price range, we found what seemed to us the perfect property.

It had so much of what we were hoping for, and extras that we expected to add later but were already on site: a solar system, rainwater harvesting tanks, and a fast fibre internet connection and equipment. There was a separate little cottage for guests or interns, and a large room in the house that we could train small groups in until we built a larger training space. To top it all off, the property used to be a coffee farm, and we could have tried our hand at reviving some of the coffee trees still growing there!

Moving forward in faith, we submitted an offer to purchase filled with the hope that this was the property for us. Unfortunately, the deadline for that offer passed without any confirmation of an agreement and we have been waiting ever since. To this day, the property is ‘officially’ listed, but the owners are still not accepting offers. With our timeline necessitating a garden launch in November of this year, we began to feel that we would need to move on from that location.

We were, initially, very disappointed. What now? We could see such possibilities for Inundo to be located in the Assagay valley because of its proximity to Durban but that door seemed to be closing. Our realtor Christine, worked diligently to represent us to the owners and advocate for an agreement to be reached. She was very helpful in submitting our offer to purchase in Assagay and now was scouring the valley to find any other potential sellers. Any other properties that were being listed on internet sites were double or triple the price of what we were looking for. On one of our visits to Assagay she had pointed across the valley and indicated that she owned a property there. We were later to discover that she was actually very interested in selling their small holding to the right buyer. We thought we would take a look, and were delighted to discover another humble gem.

The Cadmoor Road house is very well maintained and has a serene atmosphere.

Christine’s property is on Cadmoor Road. It is a lovely property but it doesn’t have an extra cottage, or solar panels etc. etc. It does, however, have all the potential for what we will need with 3 hectares (8 acres) of land. We entered into a time of discernment. Was this now the new direction for the Inundo property? At our last trustees’ meeting, when we were discussing all of this – and whether or not to put in an offer for this new property – one of the trustees reminded us of Samuel being sent to anoint one of the sons of Jesse as king:

When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:6-8)

This trustee reminded us that David was not the expected choice to be the King of Israel and that, in fact, Samuel had to ask Jesse if he had presented all his sons. In a way, we felt like this second property option came about with the question, “Are there not any other options that we haven’t considered?” This reflection also reminded that God sees all, and especially the heart of the matter; we see so little. It seems God sees the whole potential in this second property and knows it is the better choice for us. And of course, He knows the future, which we can’t see.

And so with excitement we have decided to move ahead on this second property and we look forward to all that in in store for the journey. God is good, and his leading never fails!
