A Property Gem in Assagay

Looking for land for Inundo Development is both exciting and daunting.

We’ve been searching over the last few months – physically visiting, or scouring posted listings. Generally, we’ve known our basic needs:  a few usable hectares, reasonably proximity to the airport, good accessibility, a house we can live in, and a good area from a crime and security standpoint.

Most of what we’ve seen is missing one or more of these. Or the house has been neglected for a long time and is serious need of major repairs and renos. Or, the asking price is just too much.

At times, we have felt a bit overwhelmed by it all, and by the inherent uncertainties:  timing, funding, etc. Another opportunity to walk one step at a time, with faith in the One for whom there are no uncertainties! But we’ve had an incredible team of people praying specifically for us to get clear direction in our property search.

We didn’t have a realtor representing us in our search and so we were doing the hard work of contacting individual realtors and requesting appointments for viewing. On one occasion we contacted a realtor who seemed to take an interest in our vision for Inundo. The initial property we viewed with her wasn’t suitable, but she asked some good questions about what we were looking for and why. A few days later, she contacted us saying she knew of a property that wasn’t yet listed, but she knew the owner and asked if she could bring us around. He agreed. And so, on a very rainy Saturday morning, we set up an appointment for a viewing. This was 2 weeks after our Inundo week of prayer concluded.

A front view of the house on our second visit with a beautiful blue sky and lots of sun.

We didn’t know what to expect and certainly the cloudy day didn’t do much to attract us initially to the area. A thick, low cloud covered the valley. But we found ourselves slowly intrigued as we drove up the driveway past a field of old coffee trees and pulled up to a delightful and yet modern homestead. The entire 3 hectares was fully visible with significant open areas which could be used for cultivation.

The possibilities of what could be done in this space kept popping into our minds. A front room in the house only partially finished but boasting a high ceiling could easily be used for training a group of 20 people. An upper attic room spoke immediately to us about being a library and prayer room and the kitchen opened into a dining area which would afford space for meal gatherings. We left that viewing feeling very encouraged. We had discovered a gem and now needed to do some thinking and praying.

The cottage at the bottom of the property.

Our subsequent discussions have been careful and thorough. Most of the property is gently sloped, allowing for demonstrating farming on a slope (much of the land in KZN is hilly!) but the slope is reasonable and some areas have been terraced. The house isn’t large, but it’s in good shape, with lots of recent renovation work. At the other end of the property, near the entrance to the property, is a small cottage that can be used either for housing guests or as the main office. There is fibre for internet to the property, complete with all the necessary gear for connection at the house and the cottage and all that we need for excellent international communication. There are large water tanks for rainwater harvesting – they just need to be hooked up. And there are a few solar panels at the house, and again at the cottage which ensure the lights stay on when the power goes out – an increasingly common occurrence here is SA. These water tanks and solar panels can all demonstrate our beginning commitment to harnessing as many of God’s natural resources as possible.

A satellite view of the property.

The property is where the Assagay Coffee Company first made a start. They outgrew the property and moved on to a larger tract 14 years ago, but the lines you see from the satellite picture are coffee trees – currently non-producing.

The owner is selling because he is going through some personal challenges and didn’t anticipate that he would be selling at present. He’s been there 14 years, and has never used chemicals on the plants or soil for that whole time. He cares about land, and plants, and loves what we want to utilize the property for. For that reason, he’s given us first right of refusal to purchase – provided we can get him a signed offer to purchase soon! We’ve been praying that our interactions with him will be an encouragement in this difficult time.

And so, Kerry and I, the other trustees, and EMCC World Partners – along with churches and individuals that want to see this purchase become a reality – are busy working out the funding picture and the necessary pieces to facilitate the funding transfer from a Canadian charitable organization to a South African one.

Inundo Development has been a dream in our hearts for a few years and now that we can begin to picture what it will look like it gives us hope in the waiting. There are still so many details to finalize and we ask for your dedicated prayers that every step will be God led and ordained. We have approached this whole process with conservative hearts not wanting to get carried away in too much hype. We are trusting that every step forward is taken on solid ground so that the future is stable and bright.

The big piece that is in place is an “International Project Fund,” or IPF, set up and administered by EMCC World Partners. The IPF number for this project is #341, and it has been receiving donations for the establishing of the Inundo model farm for a while now.
