Emerging Leaders in Ethiopia

Muga kneels in prayer holding a fistful of soil.

Leaders. Disciple-makers.

Students of the Word, the Spirit and the soil.

Proclaimers of holistic good news. Practitioners of freedom.

Stewards of God’s abundant resources, and equippers of others to do the same.

In order for Africa to thrive and produce an overflow, we need transformational catalysts, people committed to changing the broken systems in our world – not least in Ethiopia!

To date, we’ve held two week-long Farming God’s Way trainings for Amharic Bible School teachers in Ethiopia. The first one was for all 300 teachers, and the second one, last July, was for 50 of those who have done the most with what they learned from the first training.

From these trainings, two leaders in particular have shone out with commitment and passion – their names are Birhanu and Muga. In May, Dan will be co-facilitating a 2-week training for emerging Farming God’s Way leaders from all over Africa: South Africa, Zambia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Uganda, Rwanda, Liberia – and Ethiopia. Through the Evangelical Missionary Church we have been able to raise the funds to fly Muga to Port Elizabeth, South Africa next month to take part in this two-week training. And Birhanu is also making plans to come through his NGO network. This opportunity is truly exciting!! We are so grateful to be able to invest in Muga – to see him grow in his capacity and potential to be a support and catalyst for the rest of the Amharic Bible Schools teachers, and for the churches that are connected to the schools. Our vision is that we would see a spiritual and agronomic transformation of Ethiopia – in our lifetime!

Dan leads his training group in a prayer of dedication and Muga kneels in the distance.

We have developed a close friendship with Birhanu Y. We met Birhanu at the first Farming God’s Way training we did in Ethiopia, after he asked special permission to attend as an ‘outsider’ (not a bible school teacher). Since then, he’s come to our annual ‘In-Field Mentoring’ week in South Africa in 2017, we’ve hosted him in our home and we’ve seen Birhanu on every trip to Ethiopia. Birhanu has unbridled passion for Farming God’s Way, and he loves sharing the ‘good news’ with as many people as possible. Birhanu has taught Farming God’s Way twice in South Sudan, and last year he bought a plot of land to establish his own model farm!! Birhanu has organized the means, and the visa, to also attend next month’s training in Port Elizabeth! We are so looking forward to investing in these passionate leaders, and others from all over Africa.

Muga holds some Farming God’s Way resources on the last day of the training.

Adding to the Farming God’s Way momentum in Ethiopia is significant progress on the resources translation project. Although there are many tribes and languages in Ethiopia, the trade language is Amharic, which is spoken by most Ethiopians. We now have final drafts of both the Field Guide and the Trainer’s Reference Guide in Amharic. They are just awaiting layout and formatting, and then they will be posted as pdf’s to the Farming God’s Way website (farming-gods-way.org). These resources are available then for anyone to view online, or to print for educational purposes. Soon, Ethiopia will have free access to the core Farming God’s Way resources – for free! It’s amazing what happens when a quality resource is made widely, and freely available.

We pray for God to continue fanning the flame of Farming God’s Way all over Africa and beyond – setting the poor free, and equipping them for abundant life in Christ. Join us in praying to that end!
