“Commuting To Work”

There is a road that navigates the north boundary of Amanzimtoti. It is called Old Main Road. During apartheid this road was considered a boundary road between the urban center of Amanzimtoti and the more rural townships. On one side of the road, you see upscale houses with big fences. On the other side, you see rolling hills with small houses sparsely mingled amongst the trees.

When we lived in Calgary, it used to take us about 20 minutes to commute to work. In the winter months, it could take longer depending on the weather conditions and the state of Deerfoot Trail, the main north-south highway in Calgary. Our commute to work is very different here in South Africa. At maximum it is about a 10 minute drive along Old Main Road.

When we leave our house, we wind our way through the residential area of Amanzimtoti for a few minutes and then quickly find ourselves on the outskirts of this small town overlooking the townships. The transition from urban life to rural life is sudden and pronounced. The dividing line is still visible. On one side electricity, roads and plumbing are all in order. On the other side, utilities are much more unpredictable.  Roads are less developed. Outhouses are the norm. Cooking on a fire and laundry in a plastic tub is a way of life.

A daily dose of these nutrients, and that’s just what it takes, to keep a healthy cheap sildenafil tablets over here and normal sexual life. Old Main Road has many twists and turns. We first pass the Township of Kwamakhuta, population 20,000. Then we pass the township of Adams Mission, population 16,000. Finally we reach Bhekulwandle Township with a population of 18,000. There are a few small stores along the way, a tuck shop, hairdresser, hardware store but not much else. We will often encounter herds of cattle or goats grazing alongside the road. Pedestrian traffic is heavy as people walk to and from work or to the nearest taxi stop.

I can remember as I battled the traffic in Calgary getting to work feeling quite harried and stressed. We’ve quite the opposite effect here because the short 10 minute drive feels like a chance to breathe afresh and exhale the stresses and heavy burdens. While there are many challenges to life in the townships, there is also something good and life-giving found amidst the community there. I hope that as I describe it to you, you can get just a small taste of the wonder of being here.
