Much of what we do at Seed of Hope is to support staff and local leaders in becoming more successful in their roles. It became clear last year that we needed to provide our after-school program teachers like Khethiwe with better resources with which to plan their sessions with the 100 or so children that come to us every day after school.
In particular, a written-out curriculum detailing what topics and activities get covered when – tailor-made for our needs and expected outcomes – is what is most desperately needed.
At the moment, I am heading up a project to develop just that. Our Simunye (We Are Together) program for ages 5-10 will consist of learning and development in 4 key areas: character development, biblical literacy, English as a second language, and health education. Each month, the children will:
- learn about a character trait (virtue) to be developed;
- experience positive reinforcement when that virtue is displayed;
- learn a bible verse pertaining to that virtue;
- learn and interact with 2 bible stories;
- learn and use a new skill on their journey of learning English as a second language;
- learn a positive way to develop and maintain good health, e.g. good nutrition, dental hygiene, hand washing, etc.
