Connections in Canada

After making the difficult decision to pursue a trip to Canada in September of this year, it was time to sit back and experience all that God had in store for us. We’d decided that I would return to Canada in order to improve our support situation, as we had been underfunded for quite a while, and the situation wasn’t improving – the situation having the potential to limit our effectiveness in Bhekulwandle, or even our ability to stay in the country if things didn’t improve. Kerry would stay in South Africa with the kids. While this was the main motivating factor, we were soon to discover that God was going to accomplish so much more through connections and conversations on the Canadian side.

I departed on September 5 for 3 weeks of meetings with as many people as possible – current supporters and potential supporters – about what God is doing in Bhekulwandle. The pace was hectic, often going from an early morning breakfast meeting through to an evening meeting, after which I’d roll exhausted into bed and get up early the next day to do it all again. However, it was such a gift to be in contact with so many people and it felt like I was able to intersect with them at some pivotal moments in their lives. I told Kerry a number of times that our conversations seemed to be filled with God’s purpose and often I and the person I was connecting with would go away with a renewed sense of vision for what God was calling us to in our respective areas. I just love how God uses relationships to further his mission.

We were a bit worried I wouldn’t be able to keep that pace up for three weeks. But in actual fact, though I would be very tired at the end of each day, I’d always get up the next morning refreshed and ready to go. Truthfully, it’s invigorating to tell the stories of all the amazing things that have happened at Seed of Hope, through Seed of Hope, and in Bhekulwandle this year. I just didn’t tire of telling the stories over and over again. And it was thrilling to hear all that God was doing in Canada as well.

I packed 66 meetings in the 3 weeks. I just counted, from my calendar, and I’m amazed. – not at myself, but at God’s goodness and sufficiency. There were stories of engagements, new babies, successful surgeries, new jobs, crossroads, callings, and even Corvettes! Yes, a friend took me for a breathtaking ride in a gold Corvette.

The results? Our support levels climbed dramatically with the receipt of a few big one time donations. We remain thankful for business leaders who use that platform to partner with us. You are a gift! Plus, a number of dear friends actually increased their monthly giving. Wow, we are so thankful and humbled. We gained a few new monthly supporters. It is a big decision to commit to monthly giving and to those friends who did, we thank you for your investment in us.  The 1-time gifts have wiped out our deficit, and will keep us going for now – we still need more monthly supporters. So, if you’ve been meaning to get signed up but just haven’t got around to it, now would be a great time!

It was amazing to see that God’s timing for this trip so fulfilled his purposes. While it was a busy startup month for many, thank you for making the time to connect. A real highlight for me was interacting in a planning day with the Hopeshares board of directors. Hopeshares is the Canadian partner agency which helps fund programs at Seed of Hope. It was amazing to dream where God wants us to go in the future. I continue to be very thankful for all that Hopeshares does to keep the vision of what God is doing through Seed Of Hope in South Africa in the forefront of the hearts of Canadians. We could not be doing what we are doing without the dedicated commitment of these coworkers in Christ. A deep heartfelt thanks is extended to them all. We will continue to pray for all of you in the unique circumstances of your lives.
