UMOJA Refresher!

“A Truthful Evaluation Of Yourself Gives Feedback For Growth and Success” ― Brenda Johnson Padgitt.

If you have chatted with me for any extended period of time you are guaranteed to hear me use the word, “Umoja.” Umoja has come to classify and describe the philosophy that guides much of our thinking around Community Development.  After my return from Canada, it was three weeks of “back to normal” at the Seed of Hope Centre, and then it was off to Pietermaritzburg for three days of sitting under my community development mentor, Francis Njoroge, the creator of Umoja. You’ll know from previous blogs that Francis is from Kenya and has a wealth of experience in mobilizing communities to dream a better future, and to utilize resources in the community to address their own issues.

Francis has become a dear personal friend. It was so good to see him! The training was not new to me, but it was an excellent, and needed, refresher.  As quoted above, evaluation provides feedback for growth, and sitting under Francis’s teaching for 3 days was an excellent opportunity to look at what Seed of Hope Community Development is doing with fresh eyes.

A real bonus for me was that I was able to go to the training with Ryan Richardson, a new staff person at Seed of Hope (corporate fundraising) and Sibongiseni Dlamini (great friend, SOH board member, Bhekulwandle community leader and Oasis pastor). Ryan took the photo above during one of Francis’s demonstrations on community development. I love to see the vision for sustainable, empowering development catch fire in the hearts of others. Both Ryan and Sibongiseni are pumped about using Umoja tools to impact Bhekulwandle… and both men speak Zulu. Ryan grew up as a white child amongst a rural Zulu community. We had great times of discussion together, and with Francis, about what God is doing in Bhekulwandle and how Seed of Hope Community Development can best join Him in what he’s doing to empower the community to mobilize to work for a better future. Francis’s stories of how communities in other parts of Africa have brought about lasting change were once again inspiring evidence that it can be done.

We came away with a renewed sense to dive in and follow God’s lead into the areas where He is awakening the community. The time is now, and we are available. Transformation and change is possible.
