Thanksgiving in South Africa

Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever!

1 Chron. 16:34

There are many public holidays in South Africa: Workers Day, Women’s Day, Reconciliation Day, Heritage Day. One holiday that is not officially celebrated here is Thanksgiving. However, every year, in the month of November, Oasis Church holds a special thanksgiving service. Much of the service is dedicated to personal stories of people in our church family and what God has done in and through them. The best part about the service is that people are asked to come dressed in the brightest colours that they have in their closets. So the event is a very colourful affair.

What an overwhelming display we had! A few people were pre-selected to give a verbal testimony, but we were all given the opportunity to write, on cards, what God had done for us. Almost everyone lined up to go to the front to have their card read about what God has done! It was powerful to celebrate each milestone in people’s lives. The atmosphere was electric.

Thanksgiving is a meaningful holiday in North America and events like the Thanksgiving service at Oasis help us to intentionally reflect. However, it is good for us to remind ourselves, daily, of what God has done. Things haven’t all been easy for the people of Oasis Church; there have been a number of challenges. It was incredible to put it all in perspective, though, with reminding ourselves of the blessings we have, and the evidence of God working among His people.

Over the last few weeks, the floor to the 2nd level has been poured. Stairs are now being constructed, and columns for the roof are going up. Although there is no money right now to complete the work, the church is full of faith that God will complete the work He started. And at the Thanksgiving service the congregation gave another R100,000 ($12,500 CDN). That is incredible considering that some of our members earn less than $225 CDN per month. The hope and prayer is that Oasis will be able to move into its first ever building by the end of 2013, beginning a new chapter of impacting the surrounding communities in even more significant ways!
