Entrepreneurship Training Highlights So Far

We’re halfway through our first cycle of training an intake of micro-entrepreneurs in business and discipleship and it has been exciting. We’re using material developed by Paradigm Shift, a Christian organization dedicated to training African micro-entrepreneurs.

So far, we’re impressed with the curriculum. It offers basic training in business concepts and language, as well as offering discipleship training which ought to impact all of life, including business. Business concepts covered so far included branding, marketing, networking, keeping good records, and calculating total costs. The discipleship training included topics such as pursuing truth and wisdom, God’s view of money, God’s view of work, stewardship and prayer.

Some of our entrepreneurs had great difficulty trying to work with negative numbers – a fundamental skill when calculating profits and losses!

It was just brought home to us again the situation stacked against some of these courageous people. Not only did the school system fail them, but they must contend with rampant crime, limited transport options and restricted access to goods and services their businesses need – to name just a few of the challenges. One of the entrepreneurs came to our second class with a 2 inch stitched stab wound in his left bicep left from an attack in his community.

Getting to know each person and their story has been a wonderful highlight of our time together. 15 of the 19 graduates have already signed up for Module 2, which we start the first week in May. Pray with us that the ongoing training greatly empowers these people – economically, spiritually, socially, etc.
