September is busy training time for us, as we want to give people enough time to prepare their gardens and fields in advance of the November rains. We had a smaller group in Bhekulwandle, a total of 9 people. Although the class was small, all of the attenders left the training quite inspired – especially after they had planted a small training garden themselves, and then had a chance to see Zephania’s vegetable growing operation. The second training, in Itshehlophe, had a total of 51 people, though most were not at all 4 training days. This training gained momentum as it went. Good thing, too, as the first day I found rather discouraging. Those that came on the first day looked rather bored, and it was clear to me that some came in the hopes of handouts – some seed, or some fertilizer, or just some lunch. When it became clear that the only thing we were offering was free training (despite making the point that what we were offering was far better than free seed or fertilizer), a few left.
