Dealing with a Serious Seasonal Drought

For those wondering where our demonstration field is at, here’s a quick update.

Shortly after harvest, we got ready to plant a cover crop – a 1:3 mix of grazing vetch and tall fescue. The cover crop has many benefits. It functions as a “green manure,” adding fertility to the soil.

Because the vetch is leguminous, it interacts with soil bacteria to fix atmospheric nitrogen, in a plant-available form, into the soil, where it will be ready for next season’s crop. The cover crop has a dramatic weed suppression effect, saving us a lot of time and effort. And, its biomass will become the bulk of next season’s mulch cover. We’ll simply cut the cover crop with a hoe prior to planting, and leave the biomass on the soil surface.

The cover crop is doing its job, for the most part, but it has had to contend with a very long, dry spell. We’ve had almost no rain since March, and very little since December! It’s a good thing we planted as early as we did, or we may have had poor germination. As it is, the biomass of the cover crop is much lower than it otherwise would have been.

Our cover crop is the least of the worries in regard to the drought here in KwaZulu-Natal. Nearby municipalities have started reducing water pressure to try to avoid running out of water. Other municipalities will have no choice but to ration water.

And this just in: I just read that areas around North Durban are going to be experiencing water rationing – i.e. no water in the taps at certain times of the day – due to the worst drought since 1991.

Do join with me in praying for an end to the drought here in this part of South Africa.
