A Farming God’s Way Field Day

Sometimes, seeing, really is believing. To walk alongside a field of 3.2m high maize and see the abundance of growth is awe inspiring in this season of drought.

We wanted people to experience first hand how Farming God’s Way principles preserved our field this year.

On Feb. 4, we had our first open field day at our demonstration field. We picked a day prior to harvest, and invited as many people as we could, saying that all were welcome. Over 50 people, mostly from the surrounding community, came for a field tour and presentation, and to see the results of our efforts. We welcomed them with a snack and a cool drink, and got as many people as we could to “sign in” with their names and contact numbers. Two of the local traditional leaders also came to show their support. The main blog photo above shows men of the community with the induna/ local headman.

Zeph was in his element. He took great pride in taking groups around the field, explaining the methods used, and telling people they can do the same where they live, using what they already have. It was also amazing to see our field crew leading the tours throughout the field explaining their role in hand cultivating every step.

We used a large gazebo, which was especially useful when we had short periods of drizzle. We answered lots of questions, and received lots of great comments about how they had never seen maize that healthy or large – and that in a year with significantly less rain than normal!

One of our “adopters” in Bhekulwandle is Sakhile. I put adopter in quotation marks because, although we have been teaching him bit by bit at the garden he manages, he’s never actually been to a training. He couldn’t stop commenting on the field! Eyes as big as saucers, he just kept saying, “I’ve never seen anything like this – except on a commercial farm!” Sakhile is now a regular visitor to us at our office. He comes to hang out, talk about his garden, and to learn a next step for what his garden. He’s assured me he’ll be at our next upcoming training!

The main purpose of the field day was to inspire people to come to future Farming God’s Way trainings, and then to implement on their farms and at their homes. Pray with me that much fruit will come of the day, and that as a result many will learn how to grow food for their families, and produce for sale – God’s way!
