Community Gardening Thriving in Calgary

We have discovered something wonderful in Wildwood! Dan spent a morning with a dear high school friend, Alison Laberge in her local community. Alison dreamt of starting a community garden in Wildwood, Calgary and worked with other community members to make that dream a reality. In the photos below, you can see what they have accomplished over the last few years. The results are spectacular.

Fred Bahnson has written a book call “Soil and Sacrament.” It describes his journey in starting and running a community garden. He says in an interview on pathos.com,

The book is about a journey toward a life of being more alive. For me being fully alive is about being more immersed in God and more immersed in the land. This book tells my story about reconnecting with both.

My great fear is that people would think ‘Oh-this is just another gardening or food book.’ There already plenty of great books out there on gardening.  My intent is not primarily to get people into the garden, per se. My main hope is that by reading the stories in this book people would get more connected to God through the materials that make up this word; through connecting directly to soil; through a garden; through relationships with the local farms in their area. This book seeks to address the issues of connection. Reconnecting people to each other and the soil and how these thing might connect people with God. I want people to see the world itself as something sacramental.

When we see Alison in her element walking among the rows of her community garden, we see her being fully alive and more deeply connected to the land. It is a sacred vision and it inspires us to continue to use gardening and agriculture to connect people with each other and with God. Thanks Alison for such a wonderful example of the beauty of creation and the beauty of community!

If you want to learn more about community gardening, read the book “Soil and Sacrament.” It may inspire you to get your hands dirty!
