Children People and Relationships Seed of Hope

First Week

We’ve been out of touch for most of the week due to Internet connection problems at the flat that we are staying in. It is humorous to think that we were able to get WiFi access all through our crazy airline adventure in Ghana and the various airports that we touched down in, but are not able to get Internet access here. We have paid for access but for some reason are not able to get a strong enough signal in our particular unit. Still we’ve discovered that we can get a signal in the parking lot of our building and so we are now considering our small rented Toyota as the Wiens Internet café.

As I write this blog,  Dan and the kids are down at the beach enjoying the cool cloudy afternoon. Dan and Jeremy are throwing a beach football and Abby is dabbling in the waves. I’m happy to report that the weather has been beautiful this week. We were expecting some significant humidity and heat upon arrival… in actuality it has been wonderfully warm and manageable.

As you may have gathered, we are staying in a holiday flat on the beach until our longer-term accommodation becomes available on February 1. We spent much of last week connecting with real estate agents to view rental properties that were available. It turns out that there were very few options for a three-bedroom house to accommodate our family. In all we looked at five properties, one was in significant disrepair, two did not have any space for guests, which left us with two properties to consider. One of the properties, was only five minutes from seed of hope and the Township. It was a simple bungalow with everything that we would need only it was missing a garage.  It also was located on a significantly sloping property, the driveway of which was a very steep and dangerous. The other property was available for cheaper rent, but was farther away from seed of hope and the Township. It did have a garage,  a flat driveway, and as an added bonus it had a pool.

On Friday, we had to make the decision whether to continue searching and to let these two properties go, or decide to commit to one. It was a difficult decision but we sensed that with the rental market being so competitive that if we found something that would work now we might regret it if we didn’t act on it. We talked to some of our South African friends about the benefits of either location. As we relied on the wisdom of others, a general sense arose that the second property was a better fit for us. So on Friday, we placed a deposit and signed  a lease on the second house.

On Tuesday, Dan enjoyed a day out in Durban with the seed of hope staff. It was a visioning day and an opportunity to build closer relationships and enhance teamwork. Just to give you an idea of the work that seed of hope is doing, this week was the first week open after Christmas. The first day that the HIV testing clinic was available there were many people waiting to be tested. Four of them were young women aged 14 to 22, all orphans, and living on their own in a very small shack. One of the seed of hope nurses tested all four of them and was relieved to find them all HIV-negative. However she probed further about their situation she discovered one of the girls was being abused by her boyfriend and had welts all over her back from being beaten by him. All four of them were also going days without food. I’m happy to report that the girls have been given some food, went to church this morning and are beginning to make connections and will hopefully get them out of the situations they are in. People at seed of hope will help them apply for orphan grants, and try and get the one being abused by her boyfriend to her Granny’s or into a safe house. Pray specifically that we will be able to find some form of employment for the older ones.

In the wake of the Haiti earthquake, it is sobering to realize that there are many needs all over the world. We attended church in the Township this morning at Adam’s mission church and were led in prayer for Haiti. How encouraging it is to realize we have a worldwide family and we can care for each other.
