Fair Trade?

For many years, I did not give much thought about where I bought my clothes. We were always on a tight budget and so I tried to get the best deal for the best price. Of late however, I have tried to challenge myself to think about where items that I’m purchasing are coming from and what manufacturing and labour processes were used to make them. I would have to say that many of my friends in Calgary are far further in this journey than I am, and they have served as mentors in this process.

As we try to establish ourselves in this new place we’ve had to once again begin thinking about creating a home for ourselves. This includes the necessities of furniture, appliances, window coverings and the list goes on. It is nice to be in a season of life again where I feel like we can put down some roots. Being a woman with a strong nesting instinct, I do enjoy creating a home. Much of 2009, was about dismantling our home and so now I feel much joy in being able to make a home again.

It is quite a different experience to set up a home when you are in a place where you don’t know where to buy things, which stores are overpriced, even which businesses are ethically minded. So you feel a little lost at first. It was in this process, that I was contemplating what to do with the large windows in the house we will be renting. We have almost floor length windows in each of the bedrooms and the main living room. They don’t make windows like that in Canada!

Instead of purchasing curtains from a store, I felt strongly that it would like to give the sewing group at Seed of Hope an opportunity to make the curtains for our home. This decision has turned into a very fun experience of measuring windows, shopping for material, figuring out how many lengths of material we will need for each window and numerous other details.

Ernestina (seen above at the sewing machine) is the leader and trainer for the Seed of Hope sewing project. Over the last few years she has been studying to become a seamstress and has successfully passed level one through three to receive a seamstress designation in South Africa. She now trains other women in their level one, two, and three designations. I have really enjoyed getting to know Ernestina better as we have tackled this project together. She has a gift of paying close attention to detail. Her work is exceptionally well done.

The task of making our curtains is a large project for the women. It has given us an opportunity to examine exactly what is a fair wage for their services. We’ve had many discussions around fair trade and ethical business practices. There are dreams to expand the product line and give more opportunities for women to earn a living in this way.

If you have any expertise in the area of fair trade as we grapple with these issues we would love to hear from you and get your input. It is exciting to dream.
