Our Proposal Writing Journey With Canadian Foodgrains Bank

A while ago a coworker from EMCC, Lou Geense, came to me and suggested that we consider applying to the Canadian Food Grains Bank (CFGB) for some funding to go towards our farming training and food security project here in South Africa. On top of that, he shared a story about some farmers in Alberta who wanted to apply some of the proceeds of their farms towards a CFGB project in South Africa. It is amazing to see Canadians with a heart for the poor in South Africa. The timing of all this interest in farming in South Africa seemed serendipitous.

We knew that additional funding could advance this project in a significant way.  In that conception stage, it seemed like a huge task since we had no experience with proposal writing processes. On top of that, our first 2 proposal concepts were turned down by CFGB and we began to wonder if this was really an impossibility. Yet at the point when we felt to be at the end of our own resources, God brought us in contact with someone near us that had much experience in the proposal writing area. With their kind input, a total redraft was completed on the proposal concept paper.

Fast forward… Our concept proposal for launching Farming God’s Way training out into the community was accepted by Canadian Foodgrains Bank! This was exceptionally good news and a green light for moving forward. It meant that the “concept” is approved and now the real work begins. We have been asked to submit a full project proposal which includes: Needs assessments, statistical gathering, budgeting and general in-depth proposal writing. The standards are high, and my experience in proposal writing is low. Herein again is where God supplies more than we need. Nicole, a young Canadian Community Development student from the University of Ottawa expressed an interest in volunteering at SOH for 4 months this year. She was willing to work with me on pulling all the necessary research and data together. So we’ve got some good people helping and hopefully we’ll see an approved proposal before the end of the year.

Should we get the funding we’re asking for, we’ll be able to hire 2 outreach workers to train the community in conservation agriculture. Despite people having access to fertile land in a very conducive climate, people aren’t growing food. There are a number of reasons for this, but a main one is that most people don’t know how to grow food cost effectively with great results. We want to change that – to the point where not only will the community have much better access to nutritious food, but many unemployed people will find they can make a living growing food!

We are spending many long days on proposal writing but trusting in God’s empowerment for wisdom and understanding in the process. We look forward to this possible partnership with CFGB and the impact it will have on food security in Bhekulwandle.
