Churches in Amanzimtoti and Bhekulwandle Come Together

Something both new and highly significant happened today.

It started with a phone call last week. A church leader in Amanzimtoti called me to ask for my help. His church was scheduled to host the monthly pastors’ fraternal luncheon, scheduled for today. To make a long story short, they weren’t able to, and he didn’t know what to do.

I knew we were able to help, and so I reassured him that it wouldn’t be a problem, we would just move the meeting to Seed of Hope, and we would look after the catering as well. He was deeply grateful, and I went to work to communicate the change of venue and to organize the catering.

Meanwhile, the Bhekulwandle church leader’s committee needed help. They badly wanted to host a mass church prayer meeting on August 9, a public holiday. After trying a number of options for a large enough venue, they came up short. We decided to offer the grounds here at Seed of Hope Community Development, suggesting that perhaps a tent could be hired to provide the venue. Then we went one step further, and found a tent, owned by a church in the Amanzimtoti Fraternal, that could be borrowed for the purpose free of charge.

Then the two groups came together. Sibongiseni suggested that we invite the Bhekulwandle church committee pastors to the Amanzimtoti Fraternal meeting at Seed of Hope. What a meeting! The mass prayer meeting next week was discussed, we got a chance to explain the mission and strategy of Seed of Hope Community Development in Bhekulwandle, and we all prayed together. But the very best moment was when the all-white Amanzimtoti pastors gathered around the Zulu Bhekulwandle pastors and fervently prayed for them.

While we don’t live in the era of the old South Africa any more, the country still recognizes its divisions. Even the Church has a long way to go in terms of racial reconciliation, and moments like we had here on Tuesday are quite rare. But God is on the move, and our prayer is that this will be the start of a new day of churches of all stripes working together to address issues of reconciliation, poverty, and upliftment – to see the Kingdom come with power in South Africa!
