We commemorate Women’s Day every August 9 in South Africa. It is a wonderful opportunity to focus on celebrating the contributions that women make in their daily lives to building a country that is safe and free for all citizens. We see women every day in our communities who make huge sacrifices for their families, children and grandchildren. At Seed of Hope, I feel like we work with some of the most amazing women in the world… but then of course I am biased.
Diane is a special friend from Oasis church. I am not sure of her exact age but she must be in her mid sixties. I often bump into Diane as I am driving around the community of Bhekulwandle and she always has a story to tell of the latest person that she is helping. She has helped elderly women get into nursing homes. She has advocated for grants and assistance for many families. Surviving on a small pension herself, she often spends her precious allowance on taxi fare to reach remote parts of the rural areas to visit a person that is in need or to the local government office on a mission of advocation.
Diane is also a networker and she has worked with a team of women from all over KZN to form a group called the KZN Women’s Coalition. This coalition has as its purpose the empowerment of women. Diane had the innovative idea to bring the coalition to Bhekulwandle to meet and encourage a group of Seed of Hope sewers who have just started their own sewing cooperative called “Mtholi.” When I heard about Diane’s awesome idea, I was elated and immediately asked how I could help. When it all came together Seed of Hope and our EMCC World Partners Ministry fund was able to provide necessities like tables and chairs as well as pay for what was needed for lunch provisions. Diane kept saying, “These ladies have never had anything done for them like this! No one ever comes to Bhekulwandle!”

This amazing coalition of women travelled all from their respective areas in KZN, all at their own expense to interact and encourage our community women. It was the most amazing interaction. I have to salute the strategic and selfless thinking of this group of women. I salute Diane for her heart for women in our community.
