A Community Comes to Pray

What can one do when he feels like there is no way out of the situation he is facing? What would a mother do if she felt unsafe living in her community and didn’t feel like she had a voice? How would you feel if you had lost all hope that your community could be a place of vibrant life and economic empowerment?

The “headman” or leader of traditional authority in Bhekulwandle is called the induna. Here he addresses the attendees at the community prayer meeting. His heart for his community is evident.

To say that prayer is a powerful solution, may seem trite. In Bhekulwandle, to an astute local headman, prayer was an option he wanted to consider in addressing the overwhelming issues in his community. Not a church goer himself, this local headman called together the leaders of the churches in Bhekulwandle and presented his idea to start regular community prayer meetings for the purpose of community upliftment. It was an exciting initiative because the headman had testified how he had seen the power of God work through prayer in historical post apartheid challenges. He recognized the unexplainable power of prayer.

Community development works when the community initiates and owns an action plan. This very clear community prayer initiative was something that staff at volunteers at Seed of Hope would get behind and support. None of the local community halls were available for the meeting, so a huge blue and white tent was erected on the concrete pad on Seed of Hope property. The tent rental was donated by another Toti church. Oasis Church provided chairs and Bhekulwandle Nazarene provided the sound system. Seated at the front of the tent at a long table were local church pastors and at the far right the local headman sat quietly taking in all the energetic festivities.

Far from being a somber, stoic affair, various young men energetically took turns leading the gathering through zulu songs of power and praise. The keyboard pumped out a rhythm while voices added pulsating harmonies. In moments the cascade of singing would die into a hushed contemplation only to be revived again into a parade of praise. Rows of people would take turns coming to the front and dancing. It was an experience to behold. Old and young alike were drawn into the community spirit of intercession.

I often wonder how deeply God’s heart is stirred when he beholds a group of faithful people crying out to him on behalf of their community. To the casual observer, it was powerful seeing the unity being built on that afternoon and people reflecting their heart for community change. Even more powerful was the realization that while prayer is sometimes the only option, it is not a weak, compromising option. Rather, it is a strategic and effective means to invite the true transformational power of God into places where there are many obstacles to his power. By His glorious power there is hope that the community will become a safe place again, free from the threat of gangs and violence, a thriving place where businesses can be successful and create jobs, and a place of hope where schools give excellent education, and there is access to good healthcare. God’s power can work miracles in the most difficult places. He can bring down strongholds. In Bhekulwandle, He is already demonstrating that He is moving by drawing hearts to him and so we wait in anticipation for God to continue to move.
