Snow Skeptic Gets Inspired

Surreal would have to be the word to describe my experience as I drove to the Women’s Retreat for Oasis Church. It was a sunny, warm, winter, August afternoon drive. When I had left Amanzimtoti, I had been taking some photos at a community prayer meeting and it had been a warm 25 degrees C with no hint of snow. Yes, this is our “cooler” weather on the east coast of South Africa.  I was sweating from all the action of scouting the right shots and being up and down on my haunches. After an hour in the car, I was nearing my destination. In the car, I had climbed over 1000 meters in altitude into what South Africans call the Midlands. The weather had cooled down 10 degrees. Then much to my surprise as I crested a hill, in the distance was a panorama of hills covered in snow. I immediately felt transported into the foothills of Alberta, Canada. It was spectacular.

I discovered that when snow comes to South Africa and particularly to Kwazulu Natal, the province that we live in, there is a tradition where families drive from the Durban coast toward the Midlands to find the snow. It is about a 90 minute drive. The next day, our whole women’s group embarked on our own snow discovery journey. We had in our sights to eat lunch in the small town of Nottingham. No one really knew where we would first begin seeing snow on the ground. I was a bit skeptical thinking that we might see a little dusting of snow here and there but nothing more. However, my skepticism was quickly shattered as we began nearing the Nottingham Road turn off and I saw cars stopping at the sides of the highway next to fields of white. As we turned onto Nottingham road it became apparent that the area had received about 10cm of snow. There was a blanket of white everywhere.

Everyone in the car was pretty excited, some never having seen snow before so we stopped. Before I knew it, even the most reserved in our group had morphed into snowball mode and the shots began flying. The delight was evident to all and  playfulness unleashed fully. The photographer in me had to capture it (photos). I kept marvelling at how similar the landscape looked to the Alberta prairies which is a familiar sight to me. And it took me back to my first experience of seeing snow at the age of 12.

From the aforesaid details, it is undoubtedly why cheap pfizer viagra 100mg is believed as a healthy approach for men to treat ED. The magic of the day was in allowing myself to experience it all through the eyes of those experiencing it for the first time. It really is a sight to behold when a landscape is transformed overnight into a winter wonderland. I have never seen so many snowmen and women sitting proudly in farmer’s fields after being brought to life by some humans in a snow pilgrimage. Farmers would discover people climbing their fences all to build a snowman. We even saw a snowman built on top of an SUV and riding the highway in style.

I found myself wishing I could recapture a sense of seeing something for the first time. I felt inspired to look at the world differently and allow myself to be changed by the way others see the world. I resolved to look for the new and unexpected even in circumstances that are familiar to me. What a gift, and joy it is to see something one has never seen before.
