Translation Project Overcomes a Technical Scare

I am giddy (yes, giddy) with anticipation. I cannot believe that this dream of mine is becoming a reality. Up until now, when we do a 3 day Farming God’s Way training we use a combination of English DVD’s, English instruction and Zulu summaries. Next year hopefully, this will be changing.

Late last year, thanks to a few passionate people, we raised most of the funds needed to launch a major project – the translation of all of the Farming God’s Way training resources into Zulu. The resources include a 160-page trainers’ reference guide, a field manual and a 3-DVD video training set. They are exceptionally well done, but English versions only get us so far. A set of resources in Zulu will speak specifically to the community we find ourselves in.

I am overseeing the translation project. The first step is the trainers’ reference guide. It’s a huge job to translate it, but we’ve found a local man within Oasis Church who is doing an amazing job. I should have a first draft of the translation within days.

We had quite a scare this week, though.

We got a panicked call early in the week saying that, inexplicably, the content vanished. The file seemed to be there, but there was no content in it – not one character! And the file hadn’t been backed up.

Panic! We were all praying from that moment that we could get the data back. After doing our best, without success, we took the laptop our translator was using into a local computer shop. The technician there ran a data recovery program, and after a day or so, he was able to recover a recent version of the file – only 2 or 3 days of work was lost. A loss, to be sure, but much better than starting all over again (the version we recovered was 127 pages long)!

At any rate, the project is back on track. To put the significance of this project into perspective, isiZulu is the most common African language spoken in South Africa. Most Africans in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng provinces speak isiZulu. Those in the Eastern Cape speak Xhosa, a close relative, and those in Western Zimbabwe speak Ndebele, also a very close relative of Zulu. Now we’re talking a target population of millions of people!

The next step is to get the Trainers’ Reference Guide to its 3rd revision – we want the highest quality translation possible. Once that is completed, we’ll be working on what’s called a Master Control Sheet – a large document which clearly shows the Zulu text that needs to be shown on screen on the DVD’s and the Zulu text that will be read by a voice-over artist and overlaid on the DVD’s.

Then it’s on to post-production, and then mass duplication of the resources. Because Seed of Hope Community Development is fronting the funds and doing the groundwork on the project, the first 300 copies of all of the resources will be shipped to us. Seed of Hope Community Development will be the sole distributor of the Farming God’s Way resources in Zulu until our stock is depleted, thereby recovering our investment. Please pray with me that the rest of the project goes smoothly, and that we have Zulu resources in hand before next year’s pre-planting training season! When this becomes reality any Zulu speaker will have access to high quality agricultural training in his own language.
