Beautiful Zambia

Being a part of the Farming God’s Way team in Africa is an absolute highlight for us. It means networking with Dickson Shuwali in Malawi, Joshua Kakande in Uganda, Elias Chunga in Zambia, and many others. Recently, the whole Wiens family spent 2 weeks in southern Zambia to spend some time with these amazing leaders (photos).

About this time every year, there is a Farming God’s Way “In-field Mentoring” week. FGW trainers and emerging trainers from all over Africa assemble to hone our skills, develop up-and-comers, and (hopefully) accredit new trainers. All of this is done in the context of real-life training in a rural community. For the last 3 years, this has taken place in Lesotho in October; this year for the first time it was held near Livingstone, Zambia!

Farming God’s Way intentionally encourages families to be at this special networking time because it helps the whole family to catch a vision for serving the poor.   We all attended the trainings, participated in learning activities such as dramas, and served the community of farmers to the best of our abilities. Two years ago, we attended in Lesotho. This year, we stayed at the base of a missions NGO called, “Overland Missions” near Rapid 14 on the Zambezi river. The base is located just downstream of Victoria Falls, right on the Zambezi gorge. What a beautiful setting to stay in!

We split up into 3 teams, each team training into a different area or village. Our team trained into a nearby village called Nsongwe. The villagers were very keen to learn – their farming endeavours the last number of years have been disappointing failures. This isn’t surprising given the common practices of plowing, burning off crop residues, and monocropping. We taught how minimal soil disturbance, thick mulch covers, organic basal fertilization and crop rotations will not only bring life back into the soil, but will also minimize erosion and runoff and greatly enhance moisture absorption and retention.

What a joy, the day after the training, to help adopters lay out their fields! We led a group that laid out the fields of 3 local women. Our group consisted of the Wiens family, Ryan from Kenya, the 3 women themselves, and a few other local residents, all went together to each field to lay it out, do some further teaching, and then pray together over the land. When we were finished the 3 fields, the women broke out in song – so happy to have renewed hope for a good harvest, and thanking God for his goodness!

Please pray with us that our time in Zambia would continue to bear fruit there. We were able to accredit 3 new trainers: Joshua in Uganda, Alexander in Zambia and Candida in South Africa. These new trainers are exceptional and we are so excited about how they are going to help people in their countries to become self sufficient and successful farmers. In Zambia, Overland Missions is committed to providing the ongoing follow-up and encouragement of the farmers that we worked with; pray that these villages continue to transform and that the yoke of poverty would be forever broken!
