Aerobics for Body and Soul

In 1994 – 95, Kerry lived in Nairobi, Kenya and was first introduced to an amazing fitness program called Body and Soul. In Nairobi, it was held at Nairobi Baptist Church on Ngong road which was a 15 minute walk from where she lived. It took only a few classes to get her hooked on the upbeat music and positive message behind every class. After participating in the class for almost a year, she felt in her heart that she would like to teach Body and Soul at some point in the future. Upon returning to Canada, she went through the approval process to become an instructor and taught Body and Soul Classes in Edmonton for 3 years.

Fast forward to the present, the staff at Seed of Hope expressed an interest in physical fitness and it seemed like time to get back into the Body and Soul world… especially since discovering that the South Africa base for Body and Soul is here in the Durban area. So for the past year, Kerry has been leading Body and Soul classes at Seed of Hope. Classes were small in the beginning (above), but have now grown to over 15 people. Each 3 months we receive a new routine with a new theme. The theme for the beginning of 2014 is Amazing Life, and it has been a huge reminder of what a gift life is and we ought to make the most of every moment.

“I have never been much of a sporty person. In athletics competitions as a child I only ever qualified for the egg and spoon race. I continually tell the participants that if I can build my fitness then anyone can. I never thought that I could do pushups or squats and Body and Soul has shown me that it is possible. I used to pray for strength to do the plank and actually feel God giving me the strength to finish a song. The most enjoyable part for me is the music. The messages in the songs are so uplifting that I forget I am exercising.” KW
