The good news is that the local farmers were completely amazed at the health of our plants and the quality of harvest. As a result, many are wanting to be trained by us in how to farm with much better methods, resulting in good crops.

The main reason is that we were granted use of the field in October, just one month before planting time. We just didn’t have the time to smother-mulch the grass properly, which resulted in a season of competition for light, nutrients and moisture.

We’re looking forward to the next planting season. We’re busy getting the grass and weeds under control with a cover crop, and we’ll be using better seed as well as compost for a basal fertilizer, instead of the manure we used last season. We’re expecting to triple our yield next season!

But here’s the real news. Our methods, and results, have created quite a stir in the community. We have had farmers trying to imitate our methods just by watching what we do. Local gardening cooperatives have invited us to visit their plots of land. Neighbours have been chatting with neighbours about how green our maize is and how tall it is. People have also told us that they didn’t get much maize off their harvest this year. It has been incredibly exciting to see that our efforts are being noticed and beginning a process of transformation.   DW.
