Challenging Visa Issues

It’s been a challenging couple of months for us, as we’ve seen worrying events unfold in the South African Department of Home Affairs. It seems to have come as a shock to most people. Immediately following the election, the South African government passed a new, all-encompassing immigration act, with accompanying regulations.

The regulations have done away with any reference to volunteer and charitable activities as a category of application for a temporary residence visa. For a while, we were thinking we would not qualify to extend our current visas past their date of expiry, which is September 1! And we’re not yet sure that’s not the case. Some say the language of the act has changed, but the eligibility of charitable workers hasn’t. Others say charitable workers no longer qualify for temporary residence visas. It all depends on who you talk to, and these are consular officials and immigration lawyers!

Since the Act came into effect, there have been hundreds of instances of foreign nationals leaving the country, and then not being allowed back in. Families have been separated as a result, as some people have been deported after trying to re-enter South Africa.

There are resulting court cases (900 by last count), statements are being made from the immigration department 2 or 3 times a week, and there is a whole lot of confusion. It’s going to take months for things to settle down to (a new) normal.

Now, Cary, North Carolina-based fine artist Don Mertz adds a 21st century concern regarding the demanding visual “clutter” from our digital devices that scream for attention day and night. “Many of us grew up in an analog world but now struggle with, embrace or grudgingly accept the fact that we live in a 24/7 digital world,” he suggests. tadalafil generic online “Accessible, connected, instantaneous, and rife with tweets, texts, email, social networks,.
We debated for a while what our next steps should be. In the end, we decided to go through the process of applying for a 3-year extension to our current visas. We don’t know anyone who has done this under the new legislation, so I guess we’re the guinea pigs.

It’s not an easy, or cheap, process. All four of us needed signed medical clearance forms from a doctor. We needed radiology (chest x-ray) certificates proving we don’t have TB. We provided police clearance certificates, pay stubs, contract letters, copies of passports and current visas – the list goes on.

I’m happy to say our completed applications were submitted, along with a steep application fee, to Home Affairs this week. We’re hoping to hear a positive answer in 4-6 weeks. Pray with us that our applications will be approved!
