We gathered, seated in a circle on a cool, late afternoon in July: 11 entrepreneurs and 5 trainers. To look at the faces you wouldn’t guess the commitment it had taken to complete 18 weeks of business training. The faces were filled with pride and gratitude. They have worked hard and persevered.

It’s been such a privilege to teach, and get to know these entrepreneurs. For the last 6 months, we’ve been meeting on Monday afternoons for an hour. With our amazing training team, we’ve taught business concepts and skills such as branding, record keeping, networking, advertising, promotions, marketing, selling, saving… the list goes on. In addition, we’ve been teaching biblical concepts such as integrity, the value and dignity of work, the role of money, making sense of pain, and how to know and serve Jesus. A special thank you goes out to our dedicated trainers!

We arrived at the end of our training cycle in early July, and  held our graduation celebration. The highlight was hearing from all the entrepreneurs what the course had meant to them. We heard how businesses had grown as a result of what the entrepreneurs had learned. We heard how the entrepreneurs had gained a new vision and purpose for their businesses. And, we heard how the group had really grown together and come to see each other not just as co-learners, but as family, ready to help each other out when needed.

There was singing, food, certificates, and celebration.  Eleven micro-entrepreneurs graduated. They are beginning to see themselves as influencers in the community, and we are committed to continuing to build our relationship with them, and to continue to teach and train. Kerry is starting a monthly business club on Monday afternoons, for any of the grads that want to take advantage of ongoing learning and growth.

So where do we go from here? We’re planning on running the same cycle of training for a new intake of entrepreneurs in the first half of next year. Once that’s concluded, we hope to take those grads, and our recent grads, through a new module of more in-depth business and discipleship learning.

Please pray for our grads, their families, and their businesses. If you want to pray for them by name, their names are Ernestina, Zephania, Thandeka, Leonard, Buli, Mabongi, Stephen, Susan, Busisiwe, Thoko and Bronwyn. We hope that they will discover continued opportunities to grow their businesses and become successful.
