Culture Seed of Hope Sewing South Africa Women

A Fashion Design Extravaganza

Africa is known for its vibrant fashion. Lovely prints, thick stiff cotton dresses, gorgeous head scarves, many of us would love to get in touch with our inner African and dress tribal. South Africa in particular is known for its Shwe Shwe cotton patterns and many local women value an original design dress to wear to weddings and other events.

Having worked with the sewing program at Seed of Hope for a number of years, I was impressed with the level of skill and aptitude being shown by our sewers and I began to dream of ways to increase their skills. I dreamed of a day when women were coming to Bhekulwandle for amazing outfits. As the sewing trainer Ernestina and I chatted and prayed, we realized that we had the same dream. She wanted to increase her skills and also train other women in the areas of Fashion Design.

Through some connecting with fabric buyers in downtown Durban, I was able to get the name of a local fashion designer who was willing to come and run a course in fashion design for a few of our more advanced seamstresses. We were  very thankful for Seed of Hope’s support of the sewers in offering scholarships of half the tuition to these women. The results were beyond our expectations.
