In KwaZulu Natal, the challenges are massive, but the opportunities to “proclaim good news for the poor” are greater. I love training Farming God’s Way, because everything we teach is good news! Most people have no idea of the potential that lies in the thousands of hectares of unused land in KZN. Here, the climate is conducive to growing year round, so long as one can water their garden in the dry winter months, and gardening practices are in line with God’s created order!
Well, the good news is spreading. Requests to come and train in various areas have been picking up. So far this year, in addition to Bhekulwandle and Ithshehlophe, we’ve trained in Shongweni, Botha’s Hill, Phoenix, and Mpumalanga Township. We’ve recently received a formal request from the mayor of Ingwavuma in the far north of the province, near the Swaziland border to come and do a Farming God’s Way training. Two other areas just south of us are also asking for training.
Meanwhile, we are needing to provide regular follow-up training and encouragement to our current adopters, and we have training gardens and a field to maintain. There are regular reports to write and submit, and monitoring and evaluation activities to stay on top of. We have our hands full!
To help meet this challenge, we’ve increased the size of the team. Goodman Mngadi joined us at the beginning of October. His was an internal transfer, as he’s been the groundskeeper at Seed of Hope Community Development for a number of years now. His interest in Farming God’s Way has been growing as he’s been watching what Zeph and I have been doing the last 2 years, and as he’s helped us from time to time. He’s implemented a small garden at his home, to high standards, and is selling swiss chard to his neighbours! Goodman is excited to join the Farming God’s Way team, and will be responsible for maintaining and increasing our training and demonstration areas. We’re hoping that, in time, he will be able to help us with follow-up visits as well.
And, we’ve welcomed Nicole Jones to the team! Nicole is a World Partners missionary who, after completing all the required preparation, training and support raising, was recently deployed to South Africa. Nicole will be involved in various missions endeavours, but her main function is in supporting the Farming God’s Way program through strategic planning as well as overseeing our monitoring and evaluation components.
Nicole has settled in well. Moving to a foreign country on the other side of the world is no small thing! Pray for Nicole as she continues to get settled, finds a car and learns to drive a manual transmission on the wrong side of the road!
