A Special Connection with Griffin Juma from Kenya, a Trainer in Training

It is great to be back blogging after almost 5 months in Canada. Those months away from South Africa are valuable to us because they are opportunities to connect our two worlds. While in Canada we often find our vision sharpened as we reflect on and share uniquely African stories. It is with gratitude that we return to the continent to continue to fulfil our mandate to build leaders that will impact their communities.

It was with full intention that we returned to South Africa in early September because we had a place marker on our calendar marked as high priority, our annual ‘training of trainers’ event within the Farming God’s Way Network. We try to be involved in this event every year because it entails working with those potential leaders that have been identified as having the necessary heart and skill to advance. When the leaders assemble every year the environment is electric with so much passion and enthusiasm. These are the cream of the crop and it is a privilege to serve them in growing their skills.

Our training group gathers enthusiastically around our training plot at All Souls Church in Salt Rock, KZN.

Once again, our KZN network hosted the event near Durban (through our local partners). Trainers-in-training came from Benin, Kenya, Australia and all over South Africa! We split into three groups and held three simultaneous trainings in three different locations as part of the week together, training over 150 delegates – farmers, NGO leaders, and interested church members.

So thankful for the team that makes it possible to complete our infield mentoring every year. George and Wendy here are pictured with Griffin and Portion. George and Wendy’s encouragement meant so much.

Dan coordinated the team who trained at Salt Rock, a location north of Durban. His role as coordinator involved allocating training assignments, debriefing, supporting, and coaching throughout the entire week so that trainers get hands on timely feedback that they can apply while they are in a training schedule. Our highlight was working with a trainer nearing the end of his Farming God’s Way training accreditation process, a young leader named Griffin Juma. Griffin is a leader and pastor from Kitale, in northern Kenya and is passionate about Farming Gods Way and it’s impact in north-west Kenya.  To support his family, he has 2 jobs: managing a school and pastoring a church. All of his involvement as a trainer is done as a volunteer! He is a very busy person and somehow still manages to farm his own land and travel to communities to teach people Farming God’s Way agriculture. He has dedication!

Griffin’s enthusiasm and passion were so evident as he trained. His soft heart and wise spirit immediately drew people in and they were captivated by the message he was bringing. Griffin did a significant amount of training excelling in all the content and procedures. Dan and the junior trainers were involved as well, as the training week was carefully divided for maximum exposure for our developing trainers.

Ruth and Wilhelm assist in the layout phase of the training. Such great teamwork.

It was so exciting to see Griffin supported within our diverse training team which consisted of 3 people from the Durban area: Wilhelm, Dennis and Ruth. Deep relational bonds developed. Encouragement was passed around abundantly and the teamwork was fantastic. In total at the Salt Rock location, the team trained 60 people from all over the greater Durban area. The attendees were really enthusiastic about all they learned and Dan enjoyed working with the junior trainers (Denis, Ruth and Wilhelm), who have amazing passion for Farming God’s Way, and a real heartfelt love and concern for the rural poor. It is a joy and privilege to walk with and mentor them, as they discern God’s call to bring good news! And the amazing outcome from it all was that 4 trainers have now been added to our ongoing KZN provincial training team. The momentum is growing here as we see leadership being multiplied and we know that with multiplication comes growing influence.

As for Griffin, he is a natural leader, and an exceptional trainer. It was a real joy to work with and mentor him, and he was successful in achieving his accredited Farming God’s Way trainer status. YAY!! We are looking forward to hearing great things resulting from his investment in northern Kenya and certainly hope to keep our friendship going across the miles!
