Discovering New Territory: Farming and Entrepreneurship

Before we departed in April for our 3 months in Canada, there were a number of circumstances that God was using to get our attention. We had the sense that community engagement was beginning in Bhekulwandle as we saw different individuals invest their own energies into community changing ideas. Most significantly, the Chief responsible for our area was expressing serious interest in expanding farming training to all the communities that fell under his management. His words and actions indicated an urgency that was compelling. We almost felt torn leaving South Africa to spend a whole 3 months away as it felt like we were on the cusp of something.

You can imagine that our time in Canada gave us opportunity to reflect on what God may be saying. At the same time, we were getting very positive indications that a proposal for a Farming God’s Way project to be funded by the Canadian Food Grain’s Bank was going to be approved. We began to feel that a significant shift would need to happen in Dan’s role to enable him to expand on his involvement in Farming Gods Way training and act as the project manager for this CFG idea. Since coming to South Africa in 2010, his time had been divided between managing the Seed of Hope Community Development Centre, Worship Development at Oasis Church and Farming God’s Way. It was the right mix for the season we were in.  However with the emerging need to be more intentional about Farming God’s Way training and to expand its reach, it was clear some changes needed to be made.

After much prayer, discussion and planning, Dan’s managerial duties were reassigned to others within the Seed of Hope team. This has been a faith step for everyone due to the greater work loads. Upon our arrival back in South Africa, it felt like we were starting with a new assignment. Time and energy have now been freed up for the Farming God’s Way training strategy, as well as developing a team to implement an entrepreneurship training strategy. We’ve decided to utilize the resources of “Paradigm Shift,” a South African faith-based organization dedicated to providing cutting-edge resources geared for African entrepreneurs www.shiftingparadigms.org.

We see entrepreneurship training not simply as another piece to the Seed of Hope strategy, but also as in integral part of the Farming God’s Way strategy. While we are happy for many people to begin farming and gardening in order to better provide food for their families, our goals go beyond that to providing a stable, sustainable income for people currently unemployed. We desire that current and future farmers begin to see themselves not only as food producers, but as successful businesspeople — people who are running successful and growing business ventures whose product happens to be fresh produce, dry corn and cornmeal.

Of course, our business training strategy will welcome entrepreneurs from all types of businesses. In fact, Seed of Hope’s former graduates of our sewing program will certainly comprise a good portion of our first entrepreneurship training class. This training will provide the missing link from gaining skills to running successful businesses.

There are exciting days ahead – please pray for us, as this is all new territory. The task is a bit daunting, but we feel ready for the challenge! It is encouraging to realize that God is going before us and providing the resources necessary.
