Meeting the Farming God’s Way Team

After a lengthy hiatus, our vegetable gardens are back in production!

The hiatus was caused by a 3-month home assignment to Canada, and the fact that I was a 1-man team in Farming God’s Way. Now I have more time to devote to FGW, there is no travel on the horizon and, most exciting, we are now a 3-person team!

God has provided 2 young men, Sfiso and Zephania. Both are graduates of my Farming God’s Way training. Both are passionate about the possibilities afforded by food production as a business. Both live in Bhekulwandle. And both want to see the community transformed. Siphiso (above) is a young man with a quick witted sense of humour. He lives with his uncle Sibongiseni and is a wonderful big “brother” to their three children. We often see the girls Buhle and Hlelo climbing on Siphiso’s knees. If you want to see someone pray with passion Sifiso is that man. He is passionate about seeking God’s empowerment in his life.

Zephania demonstrates a passion for teaching others.

Zephania is a determined and accomplished farmer. He grows vegetables on his property to a very high standard and he helps his neighbours improve their gardening practices (blog). Zephania is a careful thinker and likes to ask deep questions about community development. He is astute, articulate and very intelligent.

So far, they have been helping me prepare our training and demonstration gardens and compost-making stations. They are with us on part-time temporary contracts so far, but if things keep going as they have, they will be joining us on a permanent, full-time basis early in 2014. I am mentoring and discipling them both – spiritually, in conservation agriculture, and how the two relate. I’m training them to be trainers of others. My hope is that, one day, one or both become fully accredited Farming God’s Way trainers. Do pray for them, and for me as I train them, and as we work together to bring hope to current and future farmer/businesspeople.
