A Productive Training Season

I love training. It’s my favourite thing – to proclaim good news to many who have all but given up on the prospect of growing food for their families – let alone turning food growing into a viable business!

The good news is significant. We can be free from the spiritual, emotional and financial bondage of ancestor worship. God has already provided what we need to succeed. If we sow generously (and knowledgeably), we will reap generously. We can turn to our Heavenly Father in prayer for help, wisdom, and blessing.

We’ve recently completed two 3-day trainings – one at the Seed of Hope Centre in Bhekulwandle, attended by 24 people, and one in Itshehlophe, attended by 48 people! In Bhekulwandle, we focused on mixed veg growing, as we knew beforehand who was coming and what they were interested in growing. A key component to the veg training was compost making. Vegetables require lots of organic nutrients to grow and homemade compost is the cheapest and most effective source. We try to encourage people to see the resources that are already available. Ingredients for compost are usually free and available. There was quite a buzz on compost day. Even members of the community stopped at the fence to look in at the big pile being assembled.

In Mdumezulu we focused on growing maize on a field scale. We are already working with a number of growers in mixed veg, and we’d like to see field scale growing start to take root in the area. Everyone eats maize meal every day, and the community is buying it’s maize meal from a neighbouring town. I keep telling them they should be selling maize meal to the neighbouring town! We are starring to see relationship and trust growing with this group of farmers. By the end of day three of the training, we had many more smiles and connections.

From the two trainings, we have 15 new commitments from growers to be Farming God’s Way implementers. Please pray for us as we follow up these individuals. And pray especially for these new adopters – that they would turn wholeheartedly to God, and implement Farming God’s Way to experience the results of these methods.
